New Castle, Delaware's Fun Summer!!!!!!!

The LGR New Castle, Delaware site is doing great this year!! Although our coach and student count are low compared to other LGR sites, the students and coaches are excellent! New Castle has 22 students and 3 coaches; 2 coaches for math and 3 coaches for English. On an average, their is only one student who is absent. All of the students seemed to be very enthusiastic about being apart of LGR. I think that this is because of the strong connection they have with their coaches.

This year has been very fun! We have had numerous reporters come visit the New Castle site. This was very fun and interesting to everyone. Unfortunately, none of the students wanted to have their pictures taken because they were too shy. So the reporter had to take a picture of the back of their heads with the coaches in the front. But they were still great shots. If you want to check out the article, you can go to this website. http://www.udel.edu/PR/UDaily/2008/jul/mentors072007.html.

This summer myself and the coaches are also having a bbq for the students. We all felt that the students needed a break from the educational environment and we also wanted to get to know the students better. So next Saturday, we are having a bbq at one of the coach’s house. This should be a lot of fun and everyone is very excited. Especially since there will be free food. Lol ;-)

The College Choice activities are going very well. Our first College Choice program was “Which College is for Me?” The students had to go onto fastweb.com and look up their 10 schools. But they had to answer a couple of questions about their interests before they could begin their search. This was successful because a lot of the students had no idea how to look for the ideal school for them. I feel that this helped them have a clearer view of college. We have also had a college panel. This was very fun!!!!!! I invited about 10 college students to come and all of them had a quality that the students were interested in. For example, a lot of students were interested in fraternity and sororities, so I invited two college students who were apart of a fraternity. I also invited a nursing student and an athletic student. The students had a lot of fun during this panel because they were able to ask these college students any questions that they had. The students also had a chance to network with the college students so that they could talk to them on a personal level.

LGR is going great in New Castle, Delaware. We are all having a lot of fun and learning from each other.
