NYU site
We have a great site this semester for NYU with a great set of students. Currently we have 28 students involved in the High School Fewllows Program at the NYU School of Medicine. All of our students are from ethnicities that are underrepresented in the licensed professionals fields, and they are all somewhat curious about the Medical and Medical Engineering Fields.
The most current challenge right now is that out of the 28 students there are about 5 who are not at the same level as the rest of their peers, and sometimes I can see a clear line drawn between them and the rest of the students. All of our students are eager to go to college and continue their education which makes me hopeful, but this proves to be a challenge I don't know how to tackle. On their first diagnostic, these students did about 150 points lower than the rest of their peers in both subjects. Also, two parents have called up asking that the SAT coaches not single out their children and ask them direct questions, so as not to embarass their children. This was easily solved. I just talked to that particular coach and asked her not to call on the student, unless they wanted to volunteer an answer. As for the group as a whole, I felt as though if I kept the students together in a group they would not feel pressured about not being as advanced. Also it benefits them because if the coach has to go slower it is to all of their advantage, rather than having a mix of students with different grades, where some of them might want to move fast and others need to go slower.
We have a great advantage because all of our coaches are very smart and determined, and see the importance of helping others. They have a great grasp on the SAT and as I sit in on their classes, they have the students participating and doing problems on the board. Also, on various occasions I have seen the coaches helping students with problems outside of the course. They have helped them with their Math homework before we have begun class and answered many questions about the college process. The coaches have really clicked with the students and I feel as though that is very encouraging.
