In the beginning...
Hello all -
I want to make clear that neither Columbia nor Wesleyan are the last to post. Wellesley can now claim that title! While we've had somewhat of a slow/rough start, things are really picking up now and the program is shaping up to be a success.
With only (this is Wellesley's first program year) 21 students at Framingham working with us, our class size is a little smaller than the typical 5 to 1 ratio. We have found this to work very well, as most students, especially those in the lower-level groups, are developing great relationships with their coaches/mentors. The students seem generally motivated, but participation and homework completion could definitely be a bit better. The attendance has been outstanding - only 2 or 3 actual absences so far. However, we've had a bit of an issue with several students who are needing to either come late or leave early for mandatory sports meetings. We have stressed the importance of missing as little of LGR class as possible, while trying to still be supportive of their other commitments.
We have 6 verbal and 6 math coaches who are all doing wonderful jobs, especially as first-timers with the program. They have risen to the challenge and have a great support system with 2 excellent curriculum coordinators, Mandi and Brandi! We have found this to be key - the coaches feel some sense of structure from the curriculum, and then make even more of an effort to try different things in their individual groups. They are doing a great job of running classes smoothly, although "snack time" still gets a little crazy. Our biggest challenge with coaches has been getting them to maintain a sense of excitement in the classrooms. We have no problem with some of them, but some could definitely be better. However, the students are still coming each week without complaining, so that's definitely a good sign!
Maddi, who is the Co-Director for College Choice, has been doing an excellent job. She is extremely organized and is definitely excited about developing fun opportunities for the students. We have already had an "Intro to College" night, in which the students learned about different types of colleges, locations, options, etc. In the next couple of weeks, along with the second diagnostic, we are having a common application workshop and an interview workshop, in which the students will participate in mock interviews with their coaches and peers after learning about interview tips.
Although we have had to deal with small logistical issues, and typical "first time" issues, the program has been tons of fun and is slowly starting to make a difference for everyone involved. We are hearing good things from the students, coaches, and even some of the parents. The key is to get through this first semester, step back and work out the "kinks," and get ready for next fall as Wellesley continues to be part of the LGR community!
Good luck with the rest of your semesters!
Claire
