What's Happening @ Newark LGR by Stephanie Carter, Newark LGR Site Director

I send greetings from the Newark site. Things are productive! I am new to the LGR family and I couldn’t be happier.

The program had gotten off to a slow start, but quickly picked up speed. We have a total of 20 – 25 students (and our numbers are still growing). Due to the small number of students we only have a few coaches, but their very passionate and have the student’s best interest at heart.

Our program at the Newark Site is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00pm to 6:30 pm. On Tuesdays we have verbal skills and Thursdays are our math days. Our first diagnostic occur on March 16. Our students come from Union, Newark and East Orange area and go to a variety of different schools. Our partnering site is New Community Corporation (NCC), our work site is known as the "Work force Center".

The students are talkative, energetic, excited about the program, and in addition to learning are making friends fast. My coaches are not always as dependable as I would like them to be; but for the few that are it’s a blessing to have them. Some of the students in the program feel that the verbal skills are not as challenging as they would like, but their equally challenge with the math lessons.

The Newark site will be continuing through the students Spring break, also during this time we will complete our college choice 15 hour commitment.

Our student are excited about the school visits that we will be having soon including our trip to New York City on the 29th.

Our program is getting where we want it to be, and things are falling into place. I have to shout out my Co- Director, he is WONDERFUL. I could not have asked for a better person, we complement each other nicely and he not afraid to work hard and gives a 200% effort every time. Thank You Nart, the program would not be what it is without you, the good, the bad, and the unpredictable will all be worth it in the end!

Until Next time that all…Stephanie Carter
